Uncapped 6% Back Groceries Credit Card (3% On Everything Else)

I receive compensation for content and many links on this blog. Citibank is an advertising partner of this site, as is American Express, Chase, Barclays and Capital One. Any opinions expressed in this post are my own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by my advertising partners. I do not write about all credit cards that are available — instead focusing on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same). Terms apply to the offers and benefits listed on this page.

The no annual fee USAlliance Financial Visa Signature Card earns 6 points per dollar on grocery store purchases through the end of 2023, and 3 points per dollar on other purchases for the rest of this year.

That’s really strong, though for groceries my favorite card is actually the American Express® Gold Card. It earns 4X Membership Rewards® Points at Restaurants, plus takeout and delivery in the U.S., and earn 4X Membership Rewards® points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year in purchases, then 1X); 3X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com; 1x on all other qualifying purchases.

I value Membership Rewards points at 1.7 cents apiece making the grocery rebate described here worth 6.8%. However it’s capped. If you spend more than the $25,000 a year cap on qualifying purchases, an alternative can make sense.

For ‘all other spend’ the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is still better than 3% back, in my view. It earns 2X Membership Rewards® points on the first $50,000 in purchases per year (1 point per dollar thereafter). At 1.7 cents per point, I view that as a 3.4% rebate. Earning in that category is capped as well.

Still, the USAlliance Financial Visa Signature Card will have a unique home in wallets for some of you. Note thought that you need to redeem regularly – you don’t want to park a lot of points in your account with this card (beyond even the risk that using it only for groceries will lead them to decide they do not want you as a customer). Their points expire three years from the end of the calendar year in which they are earned.
