Is Disney Cruise Line about to Buy a 9000-passenger Cruise Ship?

According to multiple news sources, Disney Cruise Line is currently in talks to potentially buy a 9000-passenger cruise ship that is already 75% completed. Say what?!?!

The Global Dream cruise ship is currently sitting in Germany after the ship builder, MV Werften, declared bankruptcy. The ship was originally designed for Genting Hong Kong for the Asian market, but Covid and the bankruptcy derailed those plans.

Details of Global Dream

The Global Dream has a planned GT of 208,000, which is smaller than Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas at 236,000 GT. Still, it’s a mega-ship, and larger than the brand-new Disney Wish at 130,000 GT. Features include:

  • 2500 staterooms
  • 9000 passengers
  • 2000 crew
  • theme park and water park on board
  • largest roller coaster at sea
  • largest cinema at sea (8 cinemas!)

Check out this concept art for the original ship’s theme park on the upper deck. Also, as you can see from this video, the staterooms were already designed with a privacy curtain and split bathroom, just like the ones on DCL.

Of course, Disney is only “in talks” to buy this vessel. Who knows when or if this purchase will move forward. But, it’s interesting to think of the possibilities for Disney Cruise Line.

What do you think of this possible new DCL ship?
