Basic Airplane Etiquette (and I need this shirt!)

A few days ago, I saw this tweet on a post on View from the Wing:

Apparently, the shirt and Southwest Airline’s response was a bit controversial, judging from all the comments. I understand that immediately gettin up after the plane lands isn’t necessarily a terrible thing. After all, people gotta stretch and get bags from overhead bins. HOWEVER, I do hate it when people immediately stand and try to “cut the line” to get off the plane. It’s one of my travel pet peeves. I’ve even had people cut in front of me and separate me from my kids when they were younger. Sure, sending a 3-year-old off the plane by herself is a good idea, said no one ever. I think I need this shirt!

Flying Etiquette

Anyway, this shirt made me think about other etiquette of flying. This is my list:

  • Don’t cut in line when deplaning. Wait for your row. (See above!!! )
  • Listen to your music/video with headphones. This includes kids.
  • Don’t go barefoot.
  • Don’t cut your nails on board.
  • Don’t put your feet up on the row in front of you or fling your hair over the seat behind you.
  • If you put your seat back, do it slowly so as not to spill food/drinks on the person behind you.
  • Use your inside voice.
  • Refrain from popping your gum (this even bugs travel guru Samantha Brown!)
  • Readers, what else would you add to this list? Do you have any experience with people not following airplane etiquette?
